GilsONITE

Gilsonite is a 99% pure hydrocarbon resin that is mined in the US state of Utah. The material is supplied as a powder. Due to its natural origin from the same constituents as petroleum bitumen, Gilsonite is a natural bitumen with high proportions of asphaltenes and is therefore particularly suitable for use in road construction.
Unlike other natural asphalts, Gilsonite has no inherent filler content and therefore dissolves completely and without residue in the road bitumen. A mixture of road bitumen and Gilsonite is perfectly homogeneous and stable in storage indefinitely at normal storage temperatures.
The special colloidal composition of Gilsonite modifies the molecular structure of road bitumen, resulting in a significant increase in mechanical stability and resistance to deformation In contrast, the cold properties are only slightly affected. The high nitrogen content in Gilsonite reduces the susceptibility to oxidative structural changes. The resistance to premature aging of the modified road bitumen increases significantly

Application

Gilsonite is mainly used for the modification of base and binder courses in order to utilize the resulting strength improvement in a targeted manner. In selected cases, Gilsonite can also be used in rolled asphalt wearing courses. The application is simple and practical. Since it is basically bitumen, it can either be melted down beforehand in the road bitumen or it can be added to the mixture at the asphalt plant (mixer): The use of Gilsonite also significantly improves the quality of mastic asphalts. As a rule, 5-10% of the binder content is replaced by Gilsonite. Due to the absence of an inherent filler, the added quantity of Gilsonite can be counted as 100% of the binder content. When used as a powder, make sure that the wet mixing time is extended by at least 10 seconds to give the additive sufficient time to dissolve.

The use of Gilsonite makes sense where high to very high demands are placed on the asphalt structure in terms of stability and durability.

    Gilsoflex

    Gilsoflex was developed for use in highly and highly stressed bituminous layers. It is a combination of Gilsonite and specially selected SIS elastomers. An insert provides the necessary elasticity to absorb the surface stresses without damage over a longer period of time and to dissipate them into the substructure. The use of Gilsoflex in combination with a simple road bitumen allows the user to produce highly modified asphalt mix directly at the plant. This also works for small quantities as needed for small construction lots such as bus bays, braking zones in busy intersections, traffic circles and heavily trafficked industrial areas. Road structures where the base and binder courses have been modified with Gilsonite, modification of the surface course with Gilsoflex is an ideal complement. By means of Gilsoflex it is possible not only to modify road bitumen, but also to increase the modification of already slightly modified elastomer bitumen.
